Chelsea Old Town Hall Wedding, London | Catherine & Peter

This was a delightful little winter wedding at the fabulous Chelsea Old Town Hall, just around the corner from the world famous King’s Road in West London.

As it was January, all the guests arrived well wrapped up to protect them from the icy chill outside, but soon thawed out in the welcoming marble-clad waiting area.  As is customary, the groom Peter was among the first group to settle down on the cosy sofas as he greeted friends and family to the wonderful celebration.  Just after Peter’s brother nervously patted his inside pocket to ensure he had the rings, our radiant bride arrived in a beautiful short wedding dress that clearly had a strong 60s vibe, which I instantly knew would look superbly nostalgic in the photos we’d planned on the King’s Road just after the ceremony.

Typically with registry office weddings there’s a queue of people waiting to get married and a strict timeline to be adhered to, so the staff there have perfected the art of being both charming and ruthlessly efficient as they conduct proceedings.  Needless to say, right on schedule we were ushered into the the small but elegant Rossetti room where the ceremony took place.  It’s very rare that I use flash during ceremonies since the last thing I want to be is any kind of distraction while marriage vows are being exchanged, but this was one of those dark winter days where there was almost no natural light to speak of.  I quickly took a couple of test shots with and without flash and decided the former would give some extra ‘pop’ that would ultimately yield much cleaner and clearer images.  As a courtesy, I let everyone in the room know that I’d be using my flash, and happily nobody objected.

In what seemed like no time at all rings were on fingers, first kisses were had and cheers and applause were being given.  This naturally meant the stairs outside were beckoning for the iconic confetti toss photos, where many famous people have stood including Bobby Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Marc Bolan and Mick Jagger among many others.  As the weather was quite literally just above freezing, I then quickly organised people into the groups that Catherine and Peter had wanted for some additional pictures on the steps, before zipping around the corner with the pair of them for a quick stroll along King’s Road.  I couldn’t help but feel for Catherine in her stylishly cut wedding dress that offered absolutely no protection from the icy chill, but both she and her new husband insisted the pictures wouldn’t look nearly as good if they were wearing coats.  And they were absolutely right!
